The Attraction of Peyote: Native American Psychedelic Spiritualities
    Ake Hultkrantz
    Also available as an eBook

“Drugs in different forms have served as stimulants for ecstasy in shamanism since archaic times.”

The Attraction of Peyote is an unrivalled exploration of the use of psychedelics in Native American spiritualities by one of the world’s foremost anthropologists of religions, Åke Hultkrantz. The author highlights how this psychoactive cactus began as a basis of shamanic power and eventually became a cult object and medicine for the initiated. He examines the formations and spread of Peyote-based religions and the extraordinary experiences that inspired them, showing the relationship between the trance states achieved in traditional “shamanic seances” and the effects of this potent hallucinatory drug.  The book is nothing less than a cultural history of Peyote, in religion, symbolism, and practice, incorporating a consideration of Christian and inter-tribal influences on Peyote traditions.

Originally published in a European small press edition, The Attraction of Peyote is available now to the general public for the first time. Unique to this edition is the author’s memoir of his own Peyote experience with the Shoshone people.

    Praise for Ake Hultkrantz.

“In a career spanning half a century Åke Hultkrantz has proven his prowess repeatedly as a scholar of American Indian religions. His latest investigation upholds his high standards of thoroughness in explaining the spread of the peyote religion among Native Americans over the past two centuries. … He reviews virtually all published (and many unpublished) accounts of the peyote religion, including his own field notes among the Wind River Shoshonis of Wyoming.”

~ Prof. Christopher Vecsey, Shaman: Journal of the International Society for Shamanistic Research.

    About the author

Åke Hultkrantz (1920-2006) was born in Kalmar, Sweden. He earned a doctorate in ethnology from University of Stockholm in 1946, followed by a second PhD in comparative religion in 1953. Between 1948 and 1990, he often conducted fieldwork and lived among Californian Native American tribes, the Arapaho, and the Shoshone who adopted him as a tribal member.

He held many distinguished academic appointments, and was a visiting lecturer at universities across Europe and the United States. He authored some four hundred papers and twenty-five books, including standard works on Native American religions.  His interest in afterlife-related subjects, shamanism, and peyote spanned his entire career.

Seeing Karma and the Big Picture

    Amalia.jpg.4b2d83b3cc0bd84f821085df1a975890.jpg

“There is so much to be studied in the bible of humanity!  By it, we know that everything has to be paid.”  So wrote Amalia Domingo Soler (1835-1909), a Spanish poet, philosopher, writer, editor, social reformer, Spiritist, and the author of Acts that Prove, recently translated into English by Yvonne Crespo Limoges and republished.  The book is about the karmic aspects of life, how suffering in one lifetime is often linked to actions in a previous lifetime.  According to Limoges, Ms. Soler, (below) is known by Spiritists as the “Grand Dame of Spiritism” and the “Chronicler of the Poor.”

“It is a collection of human incidents (usually tragic) that Ms. Soler wrote down, then asked the spirits about them,” Limoges explains.  “The language is forthright and direct. The stories were originally printed in her magazine then placed in book form known in Spanish as Hechos Que Prueban, which in English could be translated as either, “Facts that Prove” or as “Acts that Prove.” I chose the latter as more appropriate, because the chapters report actions that occurred or that people took, and then the spirits tell of the effects (consequences) of those acts, whether for good or bad.”

One of the frequent spirit communicators in the book is Father Germain, who dictated his life story (when on earth as a priest) through a medium, the result being a book which is now a Spiritist classic, in novel form – Memoirs of Father Germain.  (That very intriguing book was translated into English by Limoges’s father, Edgar Crespo.)  It is not always clear which spirit is communicating, whether Germain or another, but they offer much to ponder on, including this:  “In this period, is when man needs to know something of his life, because he now has sufficient knowledge to comprehend the advantages of goodness and the harmfulness of evil.  Therefore, since everything reaches its time, that is why we have come to awaken your attention; that is why the tables dance and why the furniture changes places, and the voices of the spirits resounded in different parts of the Earth, because it is necessary that it be understood that you are not alone in this world.”

Another communication put it this way:  “We come to give advice, to strengthen you, to teach you to know about universal harmony; to tell you that the story of your mistakes of yesterday are the causes of your misfortune today. This is the mission of the spirits near you; spurring you on to work, to cultivate your reason, and that is what will lead you to the perfect understanding of God.”

The story of Carlos and Luisa, as discussed in Chapter 11 is an especially emotional one.  The two were romantically attracted to each other in their youth, but Carlos’s mother was adamantly opposed to their relationship because she wanted her son to marry into wealth, which Luisa’s family did not have.  To please his mother, Carlos distanced himself from Luisa, but they corresponded frequently, expressing their love for each other.  Some 30 years later, when Carlos received a telegram that Luisa was dying, he rushed to her deathbed and sat by her as she took her last breath.

As explained to Mrs. Soler by a spirit communicator, Carlos and Luisa had been linked together for many centuries by a powerful love. In their past incarnation, they were married and had a daughter who fell in love with a humble peasant.  They objected to her relationship and insisted that she marry into nobility.  The humble worker was deported and died in exile.  The daughter rejected a noble suitor and died prematurely, forgiving her parents for their blindness.  In effect, Carlos and Luisa purified themselves in the present lifetime for the suffering they caused their daughter in a past lifetime.

A lady Spiritist wrote to Amelia, informing her that a newborn child had been left at the door of her house and wondering if there was some spiritual significance to it.  Amelia asked a spirit about it and was told that in her past life the inquiring woman had belonged to nobility and was deceived and seduced by a baron.  The child was taken from her at birth to hide her dishonor and placed in an asylum.  In her remaining years, she wept for her lost son and undertook many charitable acts of helpless men in her son’s memory.  The abandoned child left on her doorstep in the present life was the child of the past life returning to her.

In another chapter, we meet a man named Francisco Crea who was erroneously convicted of murdering a person and then spent 35 years in prison.  “Is it not true that the preceding story is horrific?” Soler asks, wondering where we can find eternal justice.  She received an answer from the spirit of Father Germain, who explained that some centuries ago, in another lifetime, the man killed his brother and was not held accountable. Thus, he served his time in a subsequent lifetime.

In still another story, Teodora Cruz wonders why her husband’s grandmother hates her so much.  Consulting with the spirits, Soler is informed that the grandmother is a rejected suitor from a prior lifetime who was dominated by violent passions.

There are 41 other stories in which past-life activities are linked to the current life. The author offers much profound wisdom and philosophy in explaining the issues linking the lives.  Ms. Soler offers much profound wisdom and philosophy.  In the chapter on suicide, she writes: “Living without hope!...It is not living! To live without desiring is to die without agony. Living, dominated by indifference, is to anticipate the crisis of death, it is to open oneself the pit to bury our body in it; it is to become a gravedigger.”

Soler cautions against judging others based on outward appearances.  She tells the story of a homeless person who died of hunger, in spite of the fact that 31,000 pesetas were found in his bed of rags.  Having been very greedy and very much a miser in past lives, he learned the lesson of poverty in the current life, but his past hoarding remained partially with him, the result being that he needed yet another lifetime to learn the lesson of charity.

Soler refers to atheism as the most profound desperation.  “What is life without a tomorrow; the sketch of a painting, the prologue of a story, a voice without echo, a flower without aroma? On the other hand, when hope encourages us, what unlimited horizons present themselves before our eyes! The death of the one who waits, is the death of the just, as the Catholics say, sweet and tranquil.”

Raymond and I love to share great events with you --

    especially when they are FREE!

Dr. Raymond Moody coined the term 'Shared Death Experience' with Paul Perry in their book Glimpses of Eternity. The identification of this phenomenon  convinced Raymond that an afterlife existed after almost five decades of extensive research.

Many of us would like to learn more about this phenomena and discover whether we can possibly experience a shared death with our own loved ones.

While there are no concrete answers on this side of the veil, this is a wonderful and life-affirming topic that is deservedly gaining more attention with each passing year.

Join William Peters and Dr. Martha Jo Atkins as they share their knowledge about shared death and introduce methods that can help you and a loved one to experience a shared crossing.

    FROM William Peters:

'I imagine you want a shared crossing for yourself and your loved ones.

The challenge is that most people fear dying and believe they will never see their loved ones again. This makes sense because death can be a painful and stressful experience especially if you are not prepared. In our culture, death is shrouded in mystery. It is viewed as the ultimate finality - the end of all things.

This daunting cultural perspective of death leaves us as collective “deer in the headlights” when it inevitably occurs. As such we avoid discussing death, dismiss sincere consideration of life after death, and when death and the accompanying grief naturally do ultimately arrive, we feel immense social pressure to “get over it” and move on.

The cumulative effects of this are that we know extraordinarily little about the death and dying process, let alone the shared crossings that validate that our relationships with loved ones do endure beyond death.

That’s why I created this webinar as a guide for how to prepare for the spiritual aspects of death and dying.'

For almost thirty years, she has been working with grieving and bereaved children and families + people at end-of-life and the ones who love them. The landscape of dying can be frightening. It doesn’t have to be. Her intention is to support people in moving beyond the worry and panic and what-ifs, so that in the midst of the unknowns at end-of-life, you can be fully there - in the messy, glorious, life affirming, deeply ordinary and extraordinary holy space that is dying, leaning into all of it.

ITC Gem 22: How Things Work in ITC

Posted on 2010 October 2 by Mark Macy

Editor’s note: Here are some excerpts from issues of CETL INFOnews that I published in 1992, while working closely with the Luxembourg researchers. In the first communication, spirit friend Swejen Salter describes some of the pictures that she and her colleagues at Timestream spirit group sent through the television in the CETL lab. She explains why people and places on her side often look so much like people and places on Earth. The following reports were written by Maggy Harsch-Fischbach, who along with her husband Jules Harsch started and operated CETL (Cercle d’Etude sur la Transcommunication).

    – – – Begin CETL Reports – – –

Astral structures. Skeptics accuse CETL of faking spirit pictures because they so closely resemble earthside pictures. Swejen explained:

This is how things look here. The people we show you are represented as they look to us. Do not expect perfect pictures. In time we shall gradually improve picture transmission. There are landscapes here that look very similar to those on Earth. These are overlaps of your world with our world. When people arrive here they wish to see a countryside and scenes that they remember from Earth. Therefore, if you see similarities with Earth they may well be reproductions in our planes of life. If you look closely enough you will discover that they are never exactly the same.

(click here [landscape] and click here [face] to see some of those early transvideos that came through the CETL TV)

Spirit hierarchy. Konstantin Raudive, who is himself a resident of a higher plane (fourth) and works with Timestream on the third plane, explained how the various levels of spirit work together to produce ITC contacts:

We are doing well and enjoy free will and choice, but cannot ignore a certain degree of order and some rules. There is a hierarchy of beings above us. For example, the last word about interdimensional communication is up to higher beings.

The all-important contact field. When I questioned Swejen about a public demonstration of MEZA-I she replied it could only take place when the contact field of the participants Homes, Malkhoff, the Mohnen couple, the Stasiaks and ourselves was totally built up.

Swejen Salter: Try to be one in your minds and we can make those contacts with MEZA-I. Only then can we consider a second group contact and, finally, a large circle.

But these conditions of unity of mind, in spite of everyone’s efforts, could not be achieved. I had asked the Technician as early as 1989 to help us in establishing a contact field in public on “the good will of the people.” Experience has taught us that such an undertaking would be extremely difficult even in a small group, but even more so among a large group.

The requirements have not changed to this date and no technical system, no matter how sophisticated, can presently compensate for a weak or missing contact field.

Technician: If you can get people together whose minds think like one and harmonize with each other, then we shall have a favorable frequency.

The Technician’s words remind me of finding needles in haystacks.

It has been our experience that all equipment combinations we have tried in cooperation with the other side were built on the principle, “Unity and harmony of thought among participants.”

Human emotions and feelings play a part in developing a contact field.

Swejen Salter (March 11, 1992): Not only the actions of the experimenters help in setting up a good contact but also the feelings of those who are only passive participants. Grief, joy, hope and tension as well as your ITC efforts are visible to us on the screens of our apparatus and are comparable to a dress pattern. When certain lines superimpose and cross each other we can go on with the contact, when some lines move too far from the axis, a contact switching is not possible anymore.

Bringing together people of one mind whose feelings can be in unison is easier said than done. The mental adjustment toward fellow human beings depends not only on good will but also on a person’s general state of health. Tiredness, hunger, sickness and indisposition obstruct all efforts of the mind and lead to lack of concentration rather than harmonious thoughts.

    – – – End CETL Reports – – –

Editor’s conclusion: Most of my ITC-related writings discuss the all-important contact field and the need for harmony among researchers. It hit home for me during my second visit to CETL in 1995, when Konstantin Raudive told us through a set of radios:

It can only work when the vibrations of those present are in complete harmony and when their aims and intentions are pure.  (click here to listen)

ITC Gem 21: Time and Space in the Astral Realm

Posted on 2010 September 10 by Mark Macy

Editor’s note: This article is from the second 1992 issue of CETL Infonews, written by the researchers in Luxembourg. It’s the last post for this blog until late September, when Regina and I return from our vacation. Enjoy!

     – – – Begin CETL Report – – –

SWEJEN had scheduled a long contact for Thursday, July 23. The conversation with her lasted 20 minutes.

Spiritside: I NOTICED THAT IT IS VERY WARM ON YOUR SIDE, ALMOST 31 DEGREES CELSIUS (87 degrees Fahrenheit).

Earthside: Yes you are right. I heard on the radio the temperature is going up to 29-31*C (84-87*F). You told me also that it is always warm where you are.

Spiritside: MOSTLY 28* C (83*F). DURING THE NIGHT WHICH IS NEVER VERY DARK HERE, THE TEMPERATURE DROPS TO 10 OR 11 *C (50 or 52*F).

Earthside: That is a big difference compared to daylight. I suspect the temperatures in your world are a reflection of what most beings feel comfortable with.

Spiritside: IT IS NOT THAT SIMPLE.

Earthside: You and Richard (Burton) have traveled into other area along the River of Eternity. Are there great temperature differences?

Spiritside: AS YOU KNOW, THE PLANET MARDUK HAS TWO POLAR CAPS WHICH ARE TOTALLY COVERED WITH SNOW. THE TEMPERATURES THERE ARE UNDER THE FREEZING POINT. PEOPLE COMING FROM EARTH WHO LIVED IN MORE EQUATORIAL COUNTRIES AND WERE USED TO THE HEAT NATURALLY WISH TO LIVE IN WARMER AREAS HERE. ON THE OTHER HAND, PEOPLE FROM THE COLD AREAS OF EARTH PREFER SNOW-COVERED LANDSCAPES HERE.

Earthside: Swejen, you once said that in the building that houses STATION CO-ZEIT there are people of all cultures and races. Africans and people from cold countries go in and out. Do these beings live in an area that has the climate of their choice?

Spiritside: YES, WHEN I JOIN AFRICAN RESEARCHERS, OUR DIMENSIONS JOIN, TOO. I FIND MYSELF IN THE ENVIRONMENT THAT THESE PEOPLE PREFER. IT IS SIMILAR WHEN I MEET PEOPLE OF NORDIC ORIGIN. REMEMBER, THERE ARE NO SPACE AND TIME SEPARATIONS HERE. WHEN EVERYBODY GETS TOGETHER IT WILL BE IN AN AREA, AND UNDER CLIMATIC CONDITIONS THAT CAN DO JUSTICE TO EVERYBODY. WHEN WE WANT TO MEET DWARFS OR GIANTS WE MUST GO INTO THEIR DIMENSIONS. THAT DOES NOT MEAN I SHALL LEAVE MY DIMENSION. THE DIMENSIONS CROSS EACH OTHER.

Swejen’s explanation reminds me that she often visits places parallel with us which “overlap” with the physical dimension. It is possible for her not only to see a beautiful landscape or to admire a vivid sunset as we do, but also to see the life forms that belong there. These life forms may be higher entities, nature spirits, dwarfs or beautiful, rare animals and plants. In addition, she cannot only perceive the harmonic blending of life forms, colors and flowers visually, but also hears the sounds of wonderful music, and she describes the pleasant aroma of flowers.

When we visit a spring that is known for its healing water, SWEJEN in her dimension sees not only the spring but also the entity who gives the water power and strength.

Of everything that we see in our world, SWEJEN can see the origin in spirit. Of some of the people we meet here, SWEJEN can see their spiritual origin.

If only you believe in miracles… We could exist on a star… I know that love is the answer….
    from “Miracles,” by Jefferson Starship

Paradox: Pure love from the source gets devised along its way to Earth, where it continues to shine at the center of everyone, while bristly sparks of earthy passions flare up around it… passions for worldly things like money, power, food, drugs, and sex.

    06a-love.jpeg.96bdeb6e5533db1b2905df5d8373266f.jpeg

Years ago, when I gave presentations, I’d often play background music to capture a mood—Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun for mystery and intrigue, Bach’s Air on a G String for relaxed inspiration, and so on. On one occasion I played Miracles by Jefferson Starship to set an upbeat mood of love and miracles that are at the center of robust ITC research (spirit communication enhanced by technology). I noticed some discomfort in the audience, and when I read the lyrics of the song later on, I discovered that the word “love” generally refers to sex. I’ll probably always love that song because it just sounds so good, but I began to wonder why sex is often misconstrued as love, why the subject of sex is often inappropriate, and how love got earthy in the first place.

That’s what we’ll try to unravel today—how pure, enriching love that comes from the source and nourishes the vast cosmos gets devised in our world to become a mixture of pure love and earthier motivations like the sex drive (or like our passion for money, material possessions, good food, politics, crime dramas, and sports… including hunting and fishing where we actually kill other living things for pleasure.)

The love paradox began to stir in my mind around the time I got involved in ITC and joined the new INIT group in 1995. My Luxembourg colleagues Jules and Maggy Harsch-Fischbach received a computer text from their spirit friends describing in vivid detail the paradise world (Eden or Marduk) where many people from Earth awaken after they die and soon find themselves in their same bodies, but healthy, pain-free, and at the prime of life. The computer contact included the following excerpt:

“People here are very much like they were during their lifetime. Men and women have the same sexual needs as before their death. Since the average age here is 30 years and everybody knows that the sexual organs also serve other functions than reproduction, nobody should be surprised when I say that everything goes on as usual. However, here a woman does not get pregnant. You do not put away your sexuality, as it is a truly human characteristic. Sexual partnerships exist, provided both partners harmonize and desire it… We eat and drink like you do, but our food is produced synthetically. To put it another way, we more or less materialize physical food. The meat which some still enjoy here is only a reproduction of matter. No animal has to die for another being.”

Reading that excerpt, my first thought was…

Seriously? We can still enjoy feasting and sex in the afterlife?

And that opened a Pandora’s box of other questions:

    06b-omni123.png.1c09370082b54f798b07b33e9d816f78.png

Pure love emanates from the source and is gradually devised or changed through the various levels. When it reaches Terra, it’s radically devised by our brains, hormones, and DNA into more earthy motivations.

    • Does everyone go to level 3 paradise after they die?
No. People who overcome their earthy desires might awaken in finer levels, while people who hold onto passions that hurt themselves or others will find themselves in denser levels, for example, level 2 or Earth’s spiritual shadow at level 1. But apparently most people do awaken at level 3.
    • Why don’t women get pregnant in the afterlife?
Because reproduction, like eating, is a biological process that doesn’t apply to the spirit body. In the spirit worlds, presumably, living things are created and nourished by life-energy from the source. A human body at level 3 is a sort of energy template of the physical body at the prime of life. It’s sustained constantly by life-energy, so it doesn’t age, it doesn’t need to reproduce, and it doesn’t need other nourishment.
    • Why do spirits at level 3 have sex, if not for reproduction? (And why do they eat, if not for nourishment?)
We bring our pleasues along from Earth after a lifetime, and the level 3 paradise world—a stepping stone to finer levels—is a place where we can still enjoy earthy things like sex, eating, and (safe, pain-free) sports, but they’re no longer driven by the brain, DNA, and hormones, so there’s no intense competition and little drama at level 3, as people migrate into resonant communities and relationships. Ecstasy is a daily way of life, without the agony (which in the case of sex includes unwanted pregnancies, rape or assault, shame or guilt, lust, frustration, yearning, sexually transmitted disease, and so on).
    • Are there gays at level 3?
No doubt. After we die, we humans bring along to the afterlife the behaviors we love. As long as those things don’t harm other living things, they’re suitable for level 3. We continue to share our refined (causes-no-harm) love as we understand and feel it. Maggy Fischbach received a contact from George Cukor, a well-known gay Hollywood movie director who often brought flowers to his leading ladies and was known as “the Gentleman Director” (unlike the many Hollywood moguls who preyed upon pretty actresses).

Thomas Edison and George Cukor in the Timestream sending station at level 3.

    • Are there spiritual repercussions of abortion?
No. A spirit enters the fetus as it’s developing in the mother’s womb, and if the fetus is terminated before birth, the spirit simply moves on to a new adventure. He or she will have little or no recollection of the event… as our spirit friends explained: “Abortion is not a topic of importance here anymore as it is on Earth. Here the emotions and feelings of guilt that arose on Earth about abortion no longer play a role. One of the women who had an abortion on Earth met the youngster who would have developed out of the aborted fetus and grown into a young man on Earth. The fellow did not know the young woman (his mother) who stood in front of him. Neither did he understand the emotions she felt when she saw him face to face. He knew nothing about the problems she’d dealt with when making her decision on Earth. The short stay in the physical world inside the female’s body left no memories in his mind. He was now enjoying his existence and had found his way. Only now did the woman realize that nobody was bearing a grudge against her. Nobody in her new life was judging her, and she managed to free herself from her feelings of guilt.”
    • What happens to babies and children who die?
Typically they too awaken at level 3, where loving caretakers raise them in an accelerated growth process to adulthood, as explained by our spirit friends: “When wounded children (and grownups) arrive here they are being bedded in tubs filled with healing waters. It is not easy work. The wounds have to be treated and their bodies have to be washed. Amputated limbs regrow within a short time and the sick tissue regenerates itself… they soon forget what happened to them and play happily with the other children.” (read more… )

How Pure Love Is Devised into Earthy Motivations Like Sex

As mentioned in the above diagram, pure love from the source is gradually devised on its way to Earth, where suddenly it’s radically devised by our brains, hormones, and DNA into earthy passions like sex.

During a lifetime we still have pure love shining as an inner light at the center of our being, but it’s largely obscured by the dramas going on around us that stir up our hormones and passions.

We can mitigate the effects of Earth’s drama when we dedicate ourselves to practices like prayer and meditation, but the earthy passions never go away completely as long as our spirit is confined to the physical body.

Even after we shed the physical body at the end of a lifetime, the deeply ingrained patterns of drama and passion still exist in our spirit body for a while, but their intensity is gone.

Essentially, if we’ve lived our life in a kind way, without causing intentional harm to the people and other living things around us, we’ll almost certainly awaken at level 3, where we can resume our pleasures under paradise conditions.

These earthy pleasures become less important to us as we prepare to ascend to finer realms. Or, we might choose to reincarnate quickly into another lifetime on Earth to resume the drama and passion.

Our spirit decides what’s appropriate for our timeless soul plan.

  7. A discussion between Mike Merable and Jurgen Ziewe, two out of body travelers who venture into regions you may encounter after you transition from physical life, what some call death. Some of these are the areas reported in Near Death Experiences. We say have a better life, because life continues, and the moment you die to this reality you will find yourself in another one. "If people knew what they were, there would be no wars, no poverty; there'd be none of the ills that face humanity today; they would all be eradicated. If people only knew they were immortal non-physical species, evolving and using matter as a tool, if they knew these things, all the things on Earth would dramatically shift and change."

  9. If I may, I would like to back up Andre’s replies, ALF, and Andres. Lower entities will, from my research, enter quickly when we have not protected ourselves. I have not ever encountered such behaviour. One only has to listen to some of the inappropriate goadings of spirit that humans engage in and hear the resultant rude, swearing and downright nil respect from both sides displayed on YouTube. Of course, I am not implying or saying that is what you were doing. Communicating with spirit needs to be very respectful and reverential; otherwise, chaos will rule.

They are more like the naughty kids in the classroom, but one needs to accept that some live for whatever reason in the lower level of the astral. We know that higher spirit workers help some in the lower astral and are always there to help them. However, they must want to change. Armed with that knowledge and the knowledge that transitioning to the next part of our journey does not mean we know everything.

It has been said before and needs to be remembered that we are no different the day after we transition to the day before we transitioned.

This is the reason we are solid on recommending protection. Andres has mentioned this, but I would like to take it one step further and give some ideas on protecting yourself in your dealings with spirit. It is more a just in case you are unaware of some ideas to do centring/grounding and create the sacred space.

The first thing to know is that your guides/spirit team will not interrupt unless you ask them to intervene.

Before you go into a “session”, it is most wise to sit in silence and ground yourself. This can be done in many ways, from meditation, moving through your body and cleansing. Some people like to go through their chakras to highly structured but meaningful rituals. When you sit in silence before you start, make it known that you would appreciate your team’s presence and will shortly be moving into your “activity”. You may smudge with sage, have an uplifting mantra, or any ways to protect yourself. However, it would be best if you always asked for “only those who communicate with you to do so for the highest good”.

Before doing any recordings or any work with spirit, we suggest you open and close the “portal”. Should any untoward vocalisations occur, you may ask your spirit team to remove them. They cannot do it without your asking as we have free will, and they protect that, or you may choose to shut the session down.

I am taking the following from Student Handouts of an EVP course I used to run.

    EVP Safety

Remember you are energy working with energy

    • NEVER do EVPs when you are depressed or low in mood
    • NEVER do EVPs if you are feeling fearful

If you have imbibed in alcohol or drugs

To the point where it is becoming an obsession, isolating you, or other negative behaviours

    • Hold only positive thoughts, attitudes, and loving feelings. Communication with those in spirit is a serious, loving exchange of energy. There is no room for sensationalists and troublemaking persons seeking souls with mischievous intent.
    • Set standards, do not permit swearing, and always conduct your sessions with respectful reverence for the process.

Though I have never experienced negative behaviours such as swearing, name-calling, or being told to do things, I understand that can happen. It would be best if you remembered that you are in control at all times.

    • Do not do something /anything because an entity told you to do something. If you begin to feel uncomfortable, stop recording, ask the entity to leave, and ask for assistance from your guides.
    • Remember to do your finished grounding exercise and your thankfulness prayer to all who were helpful.
    • It is important to remember that what you give, you get, so I cannot state enough the importance of your thoughts and your intent, and to be respectful and grateful.

    General Overview

When doing EVPs, there is an overall process, I guess that is what one would call it, that has three stages

    1) Preparing for the session,

    2) Session, and

    3) Post Session.

    Preparing for the Session

    • Create an atmosphere – it is essential when communicating with those in the spirit realm that one has as positive, happy outlook as possible. There should be no disharmony in yourself; your thoughts should be free from negativity, confusion, anger or other negative emotions. You need to realise that those who are successful with EVPs prepare themselves many hours before the “event”.

Having a light meal beforehand is recommended; a heavy meal makes one tired, and no meal is as distracting as one can get hungry.

    • Energy is wasted with the two extremes.
    • A definite no-no is alcohol or drugs.
    • Spend your time before each session carefully, directing your thoughts to the person you wish to communicate with. Although, this does not guarantee that the person you want to make contact with is the person who will come through. You cannot demand or command those in the spirit realm. You will increase your chances by speaking as if you were planning with both on the earthside.
    • Be aware that this whole process is not instant. Many factors contribute to the success of EVPs. Some of these factors are your learning a new skill, developing EVP hearing ears, the capabilities of the people in spirit, what the person in spirit is doing, willingness to communicate, the relationship, and atmospheric conditions to name a few variables. There may be many more, which is why we suggest you document them. (Elsewhere on the site, we are looking for input from you, our members, into what can be included in EVP documentation.)

Some people believe that EVPs should be at a set time, e.g. 3 am Monday and Friday and that it is not to be deviated from for any reason. I can only give my personal opinion. I do not think it matters. I find I have better results if I do my EVP not long after waking; however, as far as I am aware, there is little data to indicate that a set time works better than any time. (This is another reason we are looking for a structural document for people to use. We can pin down what works for us better)

Ham radio operators, for instance, favour the 3-7 am time. It is up to you, and to some degree, to those in the spirit realm. Your respectful intent is the most critical aspect, not time.

    The Session

    This is our actual recording.

    • Start every session with three things called the three Ps. Protection, prayer and permission. That is pretty self-explanatory.

    Protection Methods

    • Each session begins with a grounding exercise that formulates your protection. There are many grounding exercises. The one I use is to visualise a shaft of pure white light coming to me from the cosmos and entering through my head, circulating my body, sweeping each part of my body and then the light proceeds to the earth’s core. I then have the white light come up from the centre of the earth through my body again and exit to continue to the cosmos. Some people allow the white light to exit them from their fingers and feet, but I like the shaft of light to come down and go back the same way. You do whatever grounding exercise is proper for you. A walk-in silence in nature, focusing on your breath, is also a great way to get grounded. Okay, that is your protection p covered.

    Prayer

    • This part of our session is to say a prayer. Prayer is simply a true, dedicated statement of intent not meant in the religious sense, but it is integral to setting the respectful intention. It is the time and place to thank all guides in advance to include anything important to you. Your prayer is where you put what you are doing out and ask respectfully for a successful outcome. Everyone has different prayers, but you are mostly demonstrating respect and formally beginning the session.

    Permission

    • It is important to remember to be respectful with clear intent and create an atmosphere conducive to good outcomes. You cannot demand or command anyone in the realm of the spirit, so of course, you need permission. You can set the intent by saying who you are and whom you would like to communicate with and asking if that person is available. Express your gratitude frequently.

    Post Session

It is vital to close the session formally. You need to finish with a prayer of thanks, of gratitude and do your grounding exercise again. Journal your experience, the experience, and any factors you think may impact the session. Journal also your mood.

Then you should completely clear your work area, wipe the desk and then reposition yourself for whatever you do in that area. For example, I would put away any papers. Move my monitor and clean under my keyboard and the rest of the table.

Wiping is primarily symbolic, but it signifies the session is over for you and those in the spirit realm.

Closing down is as important as an opening. You do not want any hitchhikers coming in on an open channel.

I appreciate this is a long answer, but we have many people at various stages of interaction. When I was asked to develop a training program, I found very little written on ethics and protection.

I trust members will find my response useful, and do please add any of your ideas or indeed what do you do before working with spirit.

  10. Yes indeed it is a pity so few know of this whole world of communication with those who have stepped through the door on the way to the next part of their journey.  We are so glad that you have found him.  He epitomises for me the work of a truly spiritual man.  It was very important for us to thank him so that he knew he was appreciated.  We tend to forget that our days here are limited and thank you is such a small word but with huge meaning.

  11. Any ritual prior to experiment. For instance one may meditate prior to an experiment, one may be prayerful, one may do nothing special.

When it comes to environment this comes up frequently in sessions with spirit that the environment around the earth creates issues for spirit.  I have now heard this from a number of sources.  In general the fear emotions, the aggressiveness and the physical and prolific "energy" from our media all play a part.

I tend to think of this as I recall a ham radio operator telling me when I was a little girl that the early hours of the morning were best for communication for him to receive.

Later on I studied Steiner more particularly the interest was in biodynamic farming which of course is very tied to the waxing/waning moon and the ether of these times indicate the action the "farmer" needs to take.

I would not have thought that environment was important but in my own experiments I have found it to be so.   My environment (my state of health physical/mental) also plays a role.    Whether this is necessary to have as a component greater minds than mine would I should think have more developed thinking.

Living on Earth has its nice moments, like peaceful walks along the beach, and its awful moments—shark attacks, tidal waves, assaults….

Daily life can be a wild ride with lots of ups and downs that can stir up our emotions.

    Typically…

    • When it’s calm and safe we experience awe, trust, empathy, and other nice emotions. We relax and feel vital.
    • When it’s violent and dangerous we feel fear, suspicion, and self-preservation. We panic and feel vulnerable.

This article takes a close look at our emotions:

    • What they are, and
    • What to do about them.

    What exactly are emotions?

Nowadays there are three popular ways to address that question (you can follow the links for details):

    1. Scientifically, emotions are products of our body (with its hormones, its DNA, and especially its brain),
    2. Psychologically, emotions are products of our body and its mind (or consciousness, which is like the brain’s software), and
    3. Spiritually, emotions are products of both our mind or (spirit, which is the real, indestructible you and me that lives forever) and our brain-driven body (which is just our mind’s meaty, makeshift earthsuit for this lifetime).

This article looks at #3—our immortal mind interacting with our mortal body and brain. That interplay between the timeless, cosmic mind (or spirit) and the fleeting, earthbound body, I believe, is where we’ll find most of the answers to the mystery of emotions.

Essentially, the body and spirit live in two different realities.

    • The body is built for stressful living on Earth with all its drama, especially contending with the predatory, parasitic, and competitive relationships among living things, including us humans.
    • The spirit lives concurrently in various spirit realms associated with Earth (as depicted below)—most of them with very little stress and drama. The mind or spirit has been assigned* to stressful Earth for this short lifetime.
*The “assignment” is typically made, before we’re born, by our finer spiritual self working with other higher beings as they assess our karma and soul plan in relation to the higher plan for Earth.

    It makes sense, then, that…

    • our subtle spirit (the “real” you and me) can get bewildered during its lifetime on Earth, which is about the only place in the vast cosmos for stressful encounters with predators, parasites, and competitors… and
    • our dense body-brain can be similarly perplexed while trying to reconcile all of life’s “normal” drama and suffering on Earth with the inherent cosmic goodness that it feels shining deep within.

The disparity between body (stressful under its normal conditions) and spirit (comparatively stress-free under its normal conditions) seems to be what causes emotions.

In which case, the general rule is:

    • When our body resonates and blends with our finer spirit (in times of low drama, low stress), we feel positive emotions.
    • When our body bristles with and deviates from our finer spirit (in times of high drama, high stress), we feel negative emotions.

So that’s a simple explanation of what (I believe) emotions are and why they happen. Now let’s take a closer look to see if it makes sense.

How Body and Spirit Blend or Bristle

Everything that’s right and good is embodied in the pure life-energy (or source light) that radiates from the center of everyone and everything, as suggested in this pulled-apart diagram of a person. That seems to be the simple truth at work throughout the cosmos: All is connected to the source. All is good.
“Bad” things only happen when the inner light is blocked or ignored—when our connection to the source is compromised—which happens a lot here on Terra. That’s when life in this wild world gets painful. Or as Cat Stevens says, it’s when “a lot of nice things turn bad out there.”

    05b-omni-shadow-bw.jpg.7681a2088520b2e141d620229ea35ca8.jpg

This is how I believe it works.

First and foremost, we get a steady stream of life-energy from the source, which creates and nourishes the entire cosmos with vitality and wonderful, positive motivations. As the pulled-apart diagram suggests, however:

    • Only a small amount of pure (non-vibrating) life-energy trickles directly from the source into us physical humans. That non-vibrating inner light from the source has infinite creative and transformative potential, but most of it streams directly from the source into the finest realms at levels 7 and 6, where it’s transduced or changed (or devised) and passed along (or delivered out-beyond) to lower levels.
    • The life-energy continues to get devised and passed down the line, through our many spirit bodies (levels of the mind), before it reaches us. The devised life-energy takes many forms and goes by a lot of names—chi, prana, holy spirit, shakti, kundalini, subtle energy… which science is only beginning to explore.
    • The rich bundle of devised life-energy coming to Earth carries a lot of positive motivations and attitudes from the finer spirit realms at levels 3-7. Though it’s not as powerful as the pure life-energy that comes directly from the source, this devised life-energy generally shapes our lives in wonderful ways.
    • We can receive a bit more of the pure, powerful, non-vibrating life-energy directly from the source by practicing techniques like meditation, in which we foster conscious contact with the source, as explained at the end of the article.
    • Fostering conscious contact also filters and refines the devised life-energy we receive from the various levels.

Second and at the same time, we live out on the fringes of the cosmos, on a material world where life has evolved in a dramatic, stressful fashion. Our bodies are designed to survive and to try to flourish amid the drama. That’s evident in the structure of our brain and the effects of our hormones and DNA. We’re built to handle stress and drama, for example with our response to fear… in which we typically “fight, flee, freeze, flag, or faint.” (Try to say that three time. 🙂 's)

So, again, it’s the disparity between our peaceful spirit and our roughhouse body that seems to be at the root of our emotions.

05c-emotionstable.jpg.14b462c755448439fdec45ceb75ed3af.jpg Here’s a helpful list of familiar emotions that we humans experience from day to day. Positive emotions (when body and spirit blend) are on the left. Stressful emotions (when body and spirit bristle) are on the right.

What To Do with Our Emotions

Well, that depends on our gender, since men and women usually deal with their emotions differently, and women typically sparkle more in that area. (read more about that… )

Still, learning to deal appropriately with our emotions can benefit us all.

Here’s a snapshot of how to deal effectively with our emotions, according to psychologists in recent years:

    • Get familiar with them: Be aware of how you’re feeling, accept all of your emotions, know when it’s appropriate to share your feelings, don’t repress them but regulate them and, if it helps, take a deep breath, give yourself some space, and keep a mood journal.
    • Manage them: Be aware of triggers, physical symptoms, and the stories you tell yourself about yourself; do positive self-talk; decide how to respond to trigger situations; focus on positive emotions; and find a therapist.
    • Manage stress: Read, listen to music, listen to calming nature sounds, take walks in nature, do yoga, bathe, rest in silence, light scented candles.
    • Recognize signs of emotional suffering: Personality changes, anger or anxiety, withdrawal from people, poor self-care, and a sense of hopelessness or worthlessness.

That can all be explored in much greater depth in this Healthline article, which contains links to many other fine articles about emotions.

But by far the most important and most effective technique for handling emotions and stress is often overlooked. It involves getting in touch with the inner light that shines at the center of everything.

Making Conscious Contact with the Source

Every body in the cosmos (every galaxy, every world, every entity) has that state of perfect bliss and complete knowledge at the center of its being. The source creates and nourishes everything with its life-energy.

Bright beings throughout the cosmos all share one underlying yearning—to return to oneness with the source.

We humans can mitigate the stress and drama of living on roughshod Terra by sharing that yearning and by taking steps to make conscious contact with the source.

I’ve explained some good techniques for making conscious contact in various articles, most recently and most concisely here….

Through meditation and by knowing the truth (that we’re all connected to the oneness), we can be instruments for the source and bring its light into the world. In fact, from a cosmic perspective, that’s our job, first and foremost.

  14. 1412813512_EdgarCayce.jpg.989e4caea8a2fc94dbb4c7252e492eed.jpg

Twentieth Century Psychic and Medical Clairvoyant

Edgar Cayce (pronounced Kay-Cee, 1877-1945) has been called the "sleeping prophet," the "father of holistic medicine," and the most documented psychic of the 20th century. For more than 40 years of his adult life, Cayce gave psychic "readings" to thousands of seekers while in an unconscious state, diagnosing illnesses and revealing lives lived in the past and prophecies yet to come. But who, exactly, was Edgar Cayce?

Cayce was born on a farm in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1877, and his psychic abilities began to appear as early as his childhood. He was able to see and talk to his late grandfather's spirit, and often played with "imaginary friends" whom he said were spirits on the other side. He also displayed an uncanny ability to memorize the pages of a book simply by sleeping on it. These gifts labeled the young Cayce as strange, but all Cayce really wanted was to help others, especially children.

Later in life, Cayce would find that he had the ability to put himself into a sleep-like state by lying down on a couch, closing his eyes, and folding his hands over his stomach. In this state of relaxation and meditation, he was able to place his mind in contact with all time and space — the universal consciousness, also known as the super-conscious mind. From there, he could respond to questions as broad as, "What are the secrets of the universe?" and "What is my purpose in life?" to as specific as, "What can I do to help my arthritis?" and "How were the pyramids of Egypt built? His responses to these questions came to be called "readings," and their insights offer practical help and advice to individuals even today.

Many people are surprised to learn that Edgar Cayce was a devoted churchgoer and Sunday school teacher. At a young age, Cayce vowed to read the Bible for every year of his life, and at the time of his death in 1945, he had accomplished this task. Perhaps the readings said it best, when asked how to become psychic, Cayce’s advice was to become more spiritual.

Tools for Wellness, Spiritual Growth, and Personal Empowerment

Although Cayce died more than 60 years ago, the timeliness of the material in the readings — with subjects like discovering your mission in life, developing your intuition, exploring ancient mysteries, and taking responsibility for your health — is evidenced by the hundreds of books that have been written on the various aspects of this work as well as the dozen or so titles focusing on Cayce's life itself. Together, these books contain information so valuable that even Edgar Cayce himself might have hesitated to predict their impact on the contemporary world. In 1945, the year of his passing, who could have known that terms such as "meditation," "spiritual growth," "auras," "soul mates," and "holistic health" would become household words?

The majority of Edgar Cayce's readings deal with holistic health and the treatment of illness. As it was at the time Cayce was giving readings, still today, individuals from all walks of life and belief receive physical relief from illnesses or ailments through information given in the readings — some readings were given as far back as 100 years ago! Yet, although best known for this material, the sleeping Cayce did not seem to be limited to concerns about the physical body. In fact, in their entirety, the readings discuss an astonishing 10,000 different topics. This vast array of subject matter can be narrowed down into a smaller group of topics that, when compiled together, deal with the following five categories: (1) Health-Related Information; (2) Philosophy and Reincarnation; (3) Dreams and Dream Interpretation; (4) ESP and Psychic Phenomena; and (5) Spiritual Growth, Meditation, and Prayer.

Further details of Cayce's life and work are explored in the classic book, There Is a River (1942), by Thomas Sugrue, available in hardback, paperback, or audio book versions.

Members of Edgar Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), the nonprofit founded by Cayce in 1931, have access to the entire set of 14,306 readings in a database residing online in our members-only section. The readings can also be found in their entirety in our physical library, located in the Visitor's Center, second floor, at our headquarters campus in Virginia Beach, which is open to the public daily.

Lilian Bailey was born in Cardiff, Wales and moved to London with her parents when she was nine years old. She had some psychic experiences as a child, but it wasn’t until after her mother’s death that eighteen-year-old Lilian was told by a medium that she had a psychic gift. Unfortunately, World War I intervened. Lilian went to France as secretary to the Director of Transportation. After the war, she married William Bailey, and they settled in Crewe. She gave birth to their only child, Dorothy Elizabeth, a year later.

When Dorothy was just an infant, Lilian discovered a book at the library entitled, Raymond or Life and Death by Sir Oliver J. Lodge. This peeked her curiosity and she read other works. In one book, William Hope, a psychic photographer was referenced. He also lived in Crewe and she met with him to see if he could produce a spirit photograph of her dead mother. William introduced Lilian to a Spiritualist church in town where she attended open circles. During her first sitting, she went into trance for over an hour. This frightened her and she refused to do it again.

With the help of a Mr. Hope and Mrs. Buxton, Lilian learned to overcome her fear of trance and connected with a spirit guide named Wootton who had been an English military officer. Lilian’s husband was skeptical and thought Wootton might be part of her imagination until the spirit spoke though another medium, Helen Duncan. Through Helen, he gave his full name, William Hedley Wootton, and gave enough details that Lilian was able to confirm his service with the War Office records.

Lilian’s public career began in the 1930’s.  She traveled by train to Manchester twice a week to give group séances, private sittings and public demonstrations. She became one of the most accomplished trance mediums in Britain, comparable to Helen Hughes, Bertha Harris, and Estelle Roberts. In 1941, she toured the country with Maurice Barbanell.

Gordon Adams, Lilian’s son-in-law, told Roy Stemman, “My mother-in-law had dealings with all sorts of people, such as the Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek and the King of Greece. So, she did not feel intimidated by royalty; it was all in a day’s work for her.”

In the 1950s, Lilian first visited Lionel Logue, King George VI’s speech therapist, and received messages which were passed on to the king. After King George’s death, Lilian received a request to give a séance at a house in Kensington in 1953. She was blindfolded and taken by limousine to the residence. As usual, she went into trance and allowed Wootton to deliver messages. It wasn’t until the end, when the blindfold was removed, that she found the Queen Mother, the Queen, Prince Philip, Princess Margaret, Princess Alexandra and the Duke of Kent sitting in the séance circle.

Lilian was sworn to secrecy and did not discuss the seance with anyone outside the family until her death in 1971.
